Yoga Made Easy- Pose 6

Pose:

Warrior 2

Now that you’ve had a week to master Warrior 1 let’s continue the theme of the mommy warrior with Warrior 2, strengthening both your peace-of-mind and your thighs. This is a perfect pose to do for those times that you’re feeling a little less than the awesome mommy that you are; like when you beat yourself up over that Krispy Kreme you indulged in, your mother-in-law made another comment about the way you choose to discipline your kids, or instead of ‘politely’ hanging up on the solicitor on the phone you decided to release your frustration with a string of four letter words. Follow the How To below and you will feel like a peaceful, strong, and beautiful mommy in no time.

Warrior 2 Benefits:

  1. Promotes flexibility in the inner thighs, hips, groin, ankles and chest
  2. Strengthens the thighs, shoulders and arms
  3. Builds stamina
  4. Relieves back pain

Warrior 2 How To:

  1. Stand in Mountain pose, reach your arms out to a T then step your feet out to the sides so that your ankles line up underneath your wrists—yes, your stance should be that wide.
  2. Keep your arms out to a T. Spin your right leg open so that your right toes are now pointing in the same direction as your right fingertips.
  3. Pivot your left heel back so that your left foot is now at an angle
  4. Bend your right knee so that it sits above the ankle. Look down to make sure that you can see your front big toe and the knee is in line with the second toe (this alignment protects the knee and the hips).
  5. The torso sits right above the hips, do not lean the torso over the front thigh—the spine should be straight.
  6. Keep the back leg straight and strong by reaching down through the outer arch of the back foot.
  7. Take a deep inhale and lift the chest up, exhale as you relax the shoulders down away from your ears.
  8. Focus your gaze is out over your front middle finger.
  9. Hold for five deep breaths or as long as you can while breathing in through the nose and out through the nose
  10. Repeat on the left side.

Warrior 2 Cautions:

  1. Diarrhea
  2. High Blood Pressure
  3. Severe neck or back discomfort

Vegetarian BBQ & Tailgating!

Summer is officially here and so are all of the sports that come along with it. Oh, and do I even need to mention the awesome barbeques? So let’s say you are planning a tailgating party or a 4th of July cookout- but you want to make it vegetarian friendly. How is that even possible?!?
Rest easy my veggie loving amigo, I am here to help you plan the perfect Veggie friendly Tailgating/BBQ/relax on the lawn experience!

First of all, if you have both veggie and non-veggie guests, you should grill vegetarian dishes first to prevent meat particles from mixing with meatless dishes. Also keep in mind that some of your carnivorous friends may get a whiff of those amazing veggie entrees and foods and decide to go meatless for the day… so cook enough for your veggie friends and then some.

Veggie Delight
Brush vegetables with flavored oils, herbs or marinades before grilling to enhance the flavor. Also, cook small vegetables in a wire grid or basket to prevent food from falling into the fire.

If you have absolutely NO idea on how to grill vegetables, don’t you worry! Here is a link that explains practically step by step how to grill just about every vegetable you can think of.

But does grilling just not feel right without filling those burger buns? I hear ya!

There are tons of options in your grocery store for veggie burgers that taste phenomenal and you can put on whatever toppings you desire. You can also make your own! I would suggest making these the night before a party or BBQ because they do need some time in the fridge.

Backyard Black Bean Burgers

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Chilling time: 1 hour
Cooking Time: 10 minutes

  • 2 cans (15 ounces each) Black Beans, rinsed and drained
  • ½ cup whole wheat or all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup yellow cornmeal
  • ½ cup chunky salsa
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • Hamburger buns

Place beans in food processor; process until fairly smooth. Add flour, cornmeal, salsa, cumin and garlic salt. Process until well combined. Spoon mixture into 6 balls on a large plate and refrigerate at least 1 hour or up to 4 hours before cooking.
Heat barbecue grill or ridged grill pan over medium heat. Coat grill or pan lightly with oil. Form each ball into a 4-inch patty about ½-inch thick. Place the patties on the grill or in pan and cook until browned and heated through, 4 to 5 minutes per side.
Serve on hamburger buns with your favorite toppings.

Still want more options? How about these recipes from “In a Vegetarian Kitchen with Nava Atlas”?

GRILLED EGGPLANT TERIYAKI

  • 2 medium-large eggplants, about 2 to 2 1/2 pounds total
  • Teriyaki Marinade (recipe follows) as needed
  • 2 scallions, green parts only, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, finely diced
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds

Slice the eggplants 1/2-inch thick and peel. Salt them and let stand in a colander for 30 minutes, then rinse well. Prepare grill. Brush the eggplant slices generously on both sides with Teriyaki Marinade. Grill on each side until nicely browned and tender (5 to 10 minutes on each side, depending on the heat of the coals). Remove and let cool slightly on a cutting surface. Cut into strips and place in a serving container. Stir in the scallions. Add enough additional Teriyaki Sauce to moisten and flavor the eggplant to taste. Sprinkle the top with the red pepper dice and sesame seeds.

GRILLED RATATOUILLE

  • 1 medium eggplant, about 1 pound
  • 2 medium onions
  • 1 medium zucchini or 2 small zucchinis, about 1/2 pound total
  • 1 large green or red bell pepper
  • Olive Oil-Lemon Marinade (recipe follows), as needed
  • 1 large ripe tomato, diced
  • 1/4 cup chopped black olives
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon wine vinegar
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
  • 1/4 pound crumbly goat cheese, optional

Cut the eggplant into 1/2-inch-thick slices. Salt them and place in a colander for 30 minutes, then rinse and drain.
Peel the onions and cut in half. Steam or microwave until just tender. Cut the zucchini in half lengthwise.
Prepare grill. Brush the vegetables lightly with the Olive Oil-Lemon Marinade. Grill the eggplant on both sides until nicely browned and quite tender, about 15 minutes total. Grill the onions and zucchini on both sides until marked with brown, and tender, about 10 to 15 minutes total. Place the bell pepper directly on the grill and turn frequently, allowing all sides to get charred. Remove and place in a paper bag to steam.
When all the vegetables are cool enough to handle, chop into fairly large chunks and combine in a serving bowl. Slip the skin off the pepper, then remove the core and seeds. Cut into small squares. Stir in the tomato, olives, herbs, olive oil, and vinegar, and toss well. Season to taste with salt and pepper. If desired, sprinkle the top with crumbled goat cheese. Serve warm or at room temperature.

If you are still uneasy about the recipes above, then go ahead and pick up some veggie burgers, or veggie hotdogs, or even veggie sausages and veggie bacon. They are all easy to grill and will please any veggie guests.

Now what’s left? Throw that sunblock on and get to grillin!

Take me out to the Ballgame…

Article By: Megan Stremick

Take me out to…just take me anywhere; I need to get out of the house! Sometimes a week will pass and I realize that my only trips outside of my house were to the grocery store, the gas station, and the bank. Keeping up a house, taking care of our one year old, and working from home does not allow for a whole lot of time to get out and play. So when the weekend rolls around and we can get out and do something together as a family it’s like a little mini vacation—if only for a few hours.

Living in Southern California where the weather is fantastic about 90% of the time, it’s no wonder our out-of-the-house activities have something to do with the outdoors; going to the beach, going on a hike, or simply going to a family members house that has a pool. Not being one who enjoys standing in line with crowds of people (as you find at theme parks) I will say that I do enjoy going to baseball games. They’re outside, family friendly (just watch out for the over enthusiastic fan who uses four letter words to start and finish his sentences), you’re rooting for your favorite team, and even though you have to pay an arm and a leg for it there’s something to be said for enjoying a cold bevarage in the middle of a warm afternoon.

So, whether it’s the beach or a ballgame let us know on Facebook or on Twitter how you are spending time with your family this summer.

BTW: 8th Continents Street team will be at the Angel’s game this weekend. Be sure to say hi and score some coupons.

Yoga Made Easy- Pose 5

Article By: Megan Stremick

Pose:

Warrior 1

Being the perfect, well rounded moms that we all are it’s part of our inherent makeup that we always strive to act in peaceful, non violent ways with everyone we encounter. This includes the times that we are confronted with a rude clerk at the store counter or that pushy woman at the department store, and yes, even when our children are acting like wild animals. It was hard for me to keep a straight face as I wrote that but let’s pretend for a moment that’s all true. No matter how calm we may try to stay in a particular situation, whether by taking deep breaths and finding our chi, or gritting our teeth and praying to everything holy to help keep us from exploding, we can be assured that there is a peaceful warrior that resides in us all. Warrior 1 is one of three warrior poses in yoga, all giving strength to the arms, back, chest, and thighs.  So strike a pose, it’s time to be mommy warriors of peace and strength.

Warrior 1 Benefits:

  1. Promotes flexibility in the back of the legs
  2. Strengthens the thighs
  3. Opens up and stretches the chest and lungs
  4. Strengthens the arms and shoulders
  5. Promotes flexibility in the hips and groin

Warrior 1 How To:

  1. Begin standing in Mountain pose at the back of your mat.
  2. Take a long stride forward with your right foot.
  3. Set your back heel down so that your back toes are now angles to the front left corner of your mat.
  4. Inhale and reach your arms up, palms facing each other, fingertips to the sky, biceps next to the ears and shoulders relaxed down.
  5. Exhale and bend your front knee so that it sits above your ankle. Look down to make sure that you can see your front big toe and the knee is in line with the second toe (this alignment protects the knee and the hips).
  6. The spine is straight with your torso above your hips.
  7. Pull the right hip back and the left hip forward—this is a small movement.
  8. Keep the back leg straight and strong by reaching down through the outer arch of the back foot.
  9. If you’re comfortable with your balance and you do not have any issue in your neck, look up between your hands.
  10. Hold for five deep breaths or as long as you can while breathing in through the nose and out through the nose
  11. Repeat on the left side.

Warrior 1 Caution:

If your neck bothers you at all in this position just look straight ahead instead of looking up between your hands.

Those with high blood pressure, severe back pain, and any heart problems should not do this pose.

If your shoulders bother you with your arms raised, lower them down by your side.

Things You Need to Enjoy a Music Festival

So now that I have listed all of the amazing music festivals that are going on in 2010, I thought I would provide a list of “must-brings” so you don’t get caught enjoying the music without the right supplies!

Sunblock
With all of the dancing, laughing and hanging out that you will be doing, it’s sometimes difficult to remember that you’re getting scorched in the summer sun. I prefer to use spray sunblock, that way I can get the hard-to-reach places without asking anyone for help. Remember to use a sport or sweat proof sunblock and even then, re-apply every few hours.

Camera
You can’t go to a music festival without your camera! Some festivals have rules about what types of camera you can bring (no movie cameras, etc.), but every outdoor festival that I know of lets you take snapshots. If you’re worried about your expensive digital camera and you’re not a hotshot photographer anyway, bring a few disposable cameras and you’ll be set. Buy the super-cheap flashless cameras for daytime, and get the still-pretty-cheap flash cameras for the evening.

Baby Wipes
Not just for babies any more, wet wipes can keep you feeling fresh as a daisy even after a few days with no shower. Your hair will still be a rat’s nest, but at least you won’t smell.

First Aid Kit
Legally-run festivals (which are the only kind you should attend) are required by law to have first aid services available and an ambulance on call, so if something major happens, there will be people to take care of you. However, they often don’t dispense headache medicine, and sometimes it’s more hassle than it’s worth to get a simple band-aid put on, so make yourself a simple first-aid kit and save yourself some trouble.

Flashlight/Headlamp
A headlamp is by far one of the most underrated music festival necessities.  If you can get past the dork-factor that is sometimes associated with a headlamp, you will find that finding things, making beds, and a late night trip to the port-o-potty just got a lot more manageable. If you can’t bring yourself to wear a headlamp, at least bring a flashlight- and then you will realize how much you want to bring a headlamp for next year’s festival.

Toilet Paper
Every attendee of a music festival knows the port-o-potties run out of TP very quickly. And even when they have some left, it is the equivalent to newspaper- not the most comfortable thing.  Bring a couple rolls of TP from home and rest assured you will be comfortable, and not stranded yelling for assistance.

Blanket or Chairs
At some point, you’re probably going to want to sit down in one place and hear some music. Some festivals don’t let you bring chairs, but most do, and if you’re bringing them, the folding canvas chairs with carrying bags are the best, comfy and easy to carry. I personally prefer to sprawl, though, and I really like those ten-dollar woven wool Mexican-style blankets. They hold up and they’re easy to carry, but if they get lost or forgotten, they’re easy to replace.

Backpack
When I attended Burning Man I saw a poor girl walking through the sand of that dessert in heels and carrying an itty bitty Chanel purse on her shoulder. That’s a great outfit for the mall, or a fine dinner, etc., but not at a music festival! Find a comfortable backpack that can fit all of the essentials and won’t put too much strain on your back.

A Broken-In Pair of Shoes
Want to look super fly at a festival??? Right on! But don’t go out buying new shoes to show off that new swag. Chances are you’re going to get blisters. There is NOTHING worse than walking around for three days straight in the hot sun with a mind boggling blister on your foot. Bring dependable shoes that are broken in. Make sure you also bring awesome socks- they can make a world of difference.

Trash Bags
This can save you on so many levels! Depending on the weather, they can help keep your things dry, be made into a poncho to keep you dry, or be there for when you are cleaning up after yourself. They can be easily stored but really come in handy if unexpected rain rolls in.

Refillable bottle
Some Festivals allow you to bring drinks, some don’t. But having a refillable bottle can keep you hydrated which is a must with all of the partying, dancing, and walking you doing throughout the festival.

Last but not least remember your Festival Pass!
Make sure to have a blast and let me know which festival you went to and how it was!
Hit me up on Facebook or on Twitter and tell me who was your favorite group/band/performer!

Create Something Saturday’s- Toilet Paper Roll Wall Art

Toilet Paper Roll Wall Art

Article By: Sara Lopez

I am a firm believer in that if you do not let your creativity out every now and again- you start to lose that artist’s touch. So for several months now I have been doing something called “Create Something Saturday’s”. I set time aside each Saturday to either paint, or write, or knit or any craft you could think of.

Recently I have moved into my very own apartment, (first time I am living alone with no family or roommates), and now that I am all unpacked- it is time to start making my apartment look cool!

In my front room I painted an accent wall eggplant that my sister-in-law helped me pick out. Although I was nervous about a purple wall- it contrasts perfectly against my green couch and hardwood floors! I love the color, but I knew I also wanted a little bit more character on the eggplant to break up the solid color.

So this week I made a Toilet Paper Wall Art installation that is not only made out of recyclable materials, but is also easy enough that anyone can do it!

Materials:

Toilet Paper rolls
Scissors
White glue
Paint + brushes
Laundry pins
Directions:

Cut the toilet paper rolls into four pieces that are roughly the same size. How many toilet paper rolls you use depends on how big you want your wall art.
Pinch the ends of the toilet paper roll pieces to make an almond shape.

Lay the almond-shaped pieces out in a design that is pleasing to the eye. And make sure to do it somewhere where your dog cannot walk through it after it is all completed and send them flying across your hardwood floor. (Learn from my mistakes.)

Glue the places where the toilet paper roll pieces touch and clip together with a clothespin to allow dry.
Continue to do this until you have created the design you desire. (The glue should dry fairly quickly so you should be able to unclip them and clip them on in the freshly glued spots as you go.)

Once the glue is dry you can now paint your design! This is where you can really let your artsy self shine. I personally wanted a simple light green accent to tie the couch in with the wall even more.
Once the paint is dry, hammer in some nails to support the design in different places.

Final step is to get the most adorable dog in the world to sit in front of it so you can take a picture and post it on the internet. (Check!)

If you decided to make this let me know! It is also simple enough to do with children if you want to do a craft time. How did yours turn out? Post a picture on my Facebook or shoot it to me on Twitter!

Make sure to stay tuned for more Create Something Saturday Ideas!

The Most Unique Ties for Father’s Day!

Article By: Sara Lopez

Sunday June 20th is Father’s Day and if you are like me, you have probably waited to the last minute to look into a gift. So what is that go-to gift for father’s day that is always loved and appreciated? A tie of course! But I know you don’t want to buy that lame, everyone has it, not this again, gift of a regular tie. So I am going to help you find the coolest and most unique ties on the internet!

For the music loving dad- we have the turntable tie! If he has a vinyl collection, a turntable, or maybe even two- he is going to love rocking this stylish tie that ranges from $30-$85. ($85 being the heavyweight pure silk)

If you have a father who is particularly fond of the gaming world- then I have the ties for you! These classic gaming ties are very fairly prices at $24.95 and they will leave your papa rocking his tie proudly and looking like the coolest dude in the office meeting.

These ties are not only dashing in black, grey, and brown- but they are also environmentally friendly. The “sonic fabric” is made from 50% cotton and 50% recycled recorded audiocassette tape. Although it is very cool, this is one of the more expensive ties on this list at $120 each.

Maybe your dad needs a little more magic in his life? Well, if he is secure enough to wear it, he will definitely look all sorts of mystical in this unicorn tie! And if he is really brave, he can even get it in the light pink color. These ties go for $30-$40

Or is your dad the sophisticated sarcastic type? Well this tie is perfect for just that. Written across the tie in French is: Ceci n’est pas une cravate. Which means: This is not a Tie. And being priced at $30-40 makes this one of a kind tie a great gift.

How about the dad who doesn’t even know how to tie a tie? No worries! We have got you covered with this how to tie a tie neck tie! Save your dad the embarrassment of not knowing how to tie his tie for only $19.95

Is your dad the type of guy that has to look professional, but deep down inside you know he has just never grown up? This tie appears to be a standard office suit tie, but at the times when dad just needs to let the goofy out, he can flip it around and have a huge tongue hanging out of his mouth. And at $14.99 I can confidently say it is worth it.

Is your dad constantly on the go? Maybe you should get him the Commuter tie. This tie comes in all sorts of different colors and has a discrete pocket in the back for his iPod to keep him entertained with tunes the entire time he is traveling.

So now you know what to give your father on Father’s Day! A tie- but not just any old boring tie, one of these awesome ones. Or have you decided to get your Dad something else? What is it? Let me know on Facebook or Twitter!

How Do I Plan for a First Father’s Day?

My Husband and our Little Charlie

Article by: Megan Stremick

Father’s Day is this Sunday and I have no idea what to do for my husband. This year was my first mother’s day and now his first father’s day so it should be a big deal right? Well, with money being tight this year I am wondering what I can do instead of buying him a gift. How do I make this a wonderful first father’s day that he will remember?

I think it’s all about spending time doing the opposite of the things that we have had to do recently around the house like paint crown and base molding, patch dings in the walls and clean out the garage. I’m thinking a father’s day that does not include a trip to home depot and the words “caulking gun” would be a great start. Fortunately for us, we live in an area with great weather right now and knowing how much my hubby loves the outdoors I’m thinking a trip to the park or the beach with our one year old son. This will be a day to get out of the house and simply be together—what dad wouldn’t love this right?

So, what are you planning for father’s day? Do you have any fun ideas for me?
Please post some suggestions on our Facebook page or send them to us via Twitter so I can make sure my hubby has the best first father’s day!

Yoga Made Easy- Pose 4

Article By: Megan Stremick

Pose:

Chair Pose

Utkatasana

We all know how to sit down in a chair, we do it everyday, but what would happen if we took the chair away and just pretended to sit down? We’d all have thighs and a butt like Jessica Alba, that’s what! This pose helps to shape your butt, thighs, and back as well as chest and shoulders, try to hold the pose for at least 30 seconds, if not longer, at a time and you will see great results. So, take a seat… just leave out the chair!

Utkatasana Benefits:

  1. Stretches the torso, shoulders, and chest
  2. Strengthens the ankles, calves, thighs, and spine
  3. Stimulates the internal organs, improving digestion
  4. Beneficial for those with flat feet

Utkatasana How To:

  1. Begin standing with your feet together and arms by your sides.
  2. Inhale the arms up, biceps nest to your ears and palms facing each other. Relax your shoulders down.
  3. Exhale and bend your knees keeping the weight of the body back in the heels (so much so that you can wiggle your toes). You are slightly bent forward at the hip hinge but the chest stays lifted keeping your spine lone.
  4. Imagine you have a string attached from your tailbone to your heels—this will help you from sticking your butt out and arching in your lower back.
  5. Hold for 30 seconds to a minute then straighten the legs, release the hands back by your side and stand straight up.

Utkatasana Caution:

Be mindful not to do this pose if you have severe headaches, insomnia, or low blood pressure.

8th Continent Soymilk at the Los Angeles Film Festival

If you have been following around with my adventures for a while- you probably remember me stopping by the San Diego Film Festival in 2009 while I was on my 8th Continent Soymilk Taste of Life Tour. (aka the Mole) Needless to say, I had an absolute blast and was amazed by all of the phenomenal and artsy shorts and films I got to see.

In three days starts the Los Angeles Film Festival which is going to be huge with more than typically 80,000 people in attendance and over 200 features, shorts, and music videos from more than 40 countries.

Unfortunately I won’t be able to go this year, but all of you Movie Buffs out there who are able to most certainly should! There are several different types of passes available for sale including the Festival 5-Pack that allows you to attend 4 different screenings of your choice and a one-day pass to the Zone Perfect live Create Lounge.
