How to make your own stocking and an 8th Continent Soymilk Giveaway!

Sure, you can always buy a stocking from the store, but I couldn’t find one with the colors I wanted and I always love crafting around the holidays! Follow these simple steps to make your very own holiday stocking!

Supplies

  • material for the boot of your stocking
  • material for the top cuff of your stocking
  • sewing supplies
  • scissors

Directions

Fold your material in half so there are two layers.

Take a stocking you have lying around and place it over the material.

Cut around the edges of the stocking, leaving about an inch to sew the seam.

As you can see, I placed one side of my stocking along the folded part and the top of it at an opened part as to not have to sew along that edge.

Sew along all the edges, making sure to leave the top open.

Don’t worry if your sewing is a little crooked, we will be turning the stocking inside out to create a neat seam.

For the cuff of the boot, take two strips of a different colored material and sew them at one side, letting the other side have extra material larger than the top opening of the boot. Do not sew the cuff onto the boot yet.

Now, turn your boot inside out revealing the clean seam you first had sewn.

Tuck the cuff material into the top of the boot material.

make sure the rough seem for the cuff is towards the toe side and the open end is by the heel.

Sew around the top part of the boot and the bottom part of the cuff so that they are connected.

Make sure not to sew the open end of the cuff yet.

Cut a strip of material from the same color you made the boot out of, fold it in half, and sew along one side.

Once you have sewn the strip of material that will be used to hang your stocking, fold it in half and tuck the open ends of the strip of the material into the open-ended cuff.

Sew the cuff closed, going over the folded material you tucked inside.

Now you are ready to fold your cuff down and hang! That is… if you can get your dog to stop trying to help out with the craft…

You can add some more fun with glitter, puff paints, buttons, however you want to decorate your stocking! This is a great way to get the kids involved with crafting as well.

Nice Job Mom: We Rock Winner meets Sara Bareilles!

Nice Job Mom: We Rock Contest Winner Sandy Nevels, with her son, Alex

Our Nice Job Mom: We Rock Contest has wrapped up and we have chosen all of the winners!

Our Grand Prize Winner, Sandy Nevels, won a trip for two to see Sara Bareilles in concert VIP style! Sandy decided to take her son along to enjoy her winnings. This included two roundtrip plane tickets to LA, three days and two nights at a hotel, two VIP all-access tickets and passes to Sara Bareilles live in concert and they got to meet and greet with the phenomenal singer! Not only that but they arrived to the concert in style… meaning a limo, and she was provided with a video camera to catch the whole amazing VIP experience!

As if that wasn’t enough Sandy will also be able to choose a school that we will donate $10.000 to their music program on her behalf!

After her trip this past weekend we jumped on the phone with Sandy to chit chat with her and ask her how she enjoyed her trip!

So… How was it?!?

It was really fun! We flew into LAX and then got over to the Renaissance Hotel and entered our room and found some goodies waiting us, including a signed CD by Sara Bareilles. The room had a fantastic view and it was a gorgeous hotel.

Right after we arrived we took off to go to Venice Summer Fest to catch up with the 8th Continent Soymilk Street Team, grab some Soymilk and walk around the boardwalk.

We also went to Santa Monica Pier, which was beautiful as well. It was a real treat because neither me or my son had ever been.  We went to L.A.Ink as well. My son loves that show so we stopped in so he could take a look at where the show gets filmed.

And then we also went to the LA Zoo as well! We didn’t want to waste any time on this trip, so we bounced all around.

Grammy-nominated Singer Songwriter Sara Bareilles greets Sandy Nevels, fan and winner of 8th Continent Soymilk’s
“Nice Job, Mom: We Rock” contest — for which Bareilles served as spokesperson — backstage at LA’s Greek Theater
prior to her July 25th concert with Sugarland. Nevels brought her 11-year old son, an aspiring musician, to meet Bareilles.

That is so awesome! Sounds like you got to experience a ton of things that LA has to offer. What would you say was the highlight of your trip?

Do you even have to ask? Meeting Sara Bareilles! She has such a beautiful voice and she hung out with my son and I and talked for a while before the concert. You wouldn’t have even known she was famous. Very down-to-Earth and was so nice! My son and I both took pictures with her and she actually made time for us before the concert. And the concert itself was awesome. Sara Bareilles has an amazing voice.

Not only did we get to meet Sara Bareilles, and catch her in concert, but we also wandered onto the set of a movie being shot. It was outside El Capitan Theatre, the street had been blocked off and there were a bunch of people and cameras and all of that. Turns out they were filming scenes for the new Muppet movie! The next morning we swung by again and talked with a few extras.

Theater prior to herJuly 25th concert. Alex’s mom was the winner of
8th Continent Soymilk’s “Nice Job, Mom: We Rock” contest, for which Bareilles served as spokesperson.

Sounds like you had some pretty cool adventures! And you brought your son along with you, which yet again shows why we picked you for being a Rock Star Mom! So we gotta ask, why do you choose 8th Continent Soymilk over other brands?

Well the straight answer is this: It’s better than the other brands. 8th Continent is really smooth and natural tasting. My mom, my son, and I won’t even drink any other brand because we know 8th Continent has the best flavor all around. You can even freeze it and eat it like a sorbet in the summer, drink it right out of the glass, have it on cereal, and you can even cook with it! My favorite is using 8th Continent Soymilk Vanilla to make Banana Nut Bread.

That sounds delicious! Make sure to send some our way the next time you bake up a batch.

End interview

Sandy and her son enjoyed their trip out to LA, and we want to congratulate the 4 First Place Winners as well! They will all get a VIP night out on the town and $10,000 each to donate to a school’s music program on their behalf.
Didn’t get a chance to enter but still want to hang out with all the rock star parents? No worries! Go here and register and you can browse around and view other tips. You also get a $2.00 coupon in your email just for registering. But there is a print limit on those and lots of people are grabbing them up so make sure to print yours out while supplies last!

Nice Job Mom: We Rock- The Winners Announced!

The Winners have been chosen!

We asked you to tell us why you rock and submit tips on how to be a rockstar parent! And you did! A LOT of you did! The votes are in and we have chosen the winners. Congratulations to everyone!

  • Grand prize winner Sandy Nevels’ tip was to involve kids in a healthy lifestyle by exercising daily, visiting farmers markets, growing a garden and preparing and cooking meals together.
  • Marybeth Mank suggested that moms parent their kids with “love and logic. Allow them to make their own decisions, within reason. Then, help them to live by the consequences of making those decisions.”
  • Debra Baron explained that she remembers how she wanted to be treated as a kid. As a result, she removed the conversational filter with her own kids so that her teens and their friends know that there is no topic that will ever be considered off limits in her home.
  • Jillian Cupps shared this quick trick for moms who want to look good and be practical: Trade dresses for events with friends. She posed the question: “How many times have you bought a dress for a large event and only wore it once because you were photographed in it so many times?”
  • Joanie Atwater drove the music education theme home – she explained that she creates home music videos with her kids to make great memories they can enjoy now and laugh at later.

We recognized Nevels by awarding her a trip Los Angeles, where she and her son will enjoy the VIP treatment, including a private meeting with Sara Bareilles prior to her performance at the famed Greek Theater. We will also recognize her, along with Mank, Baron, Cupps and Atwater, by donating – in each of their names – $10,000 earmarked for the music education program at a school of their choosing – for a total of $50,000 to advance in-school music programs. Checks will be presented to each school in Fall 2011 by Sara Bareilles and us here at 8th Continent Soymilk!

Congratulations to all of the winners and if you haven’t checked out the amazing Rockstar Mom Tips yet, head on over to our website and register to get a $2.00 coupon and see how parents rock out!

Why Music Education Rocks!

Music education in schools doesn’t just benefit the musically inclined students – it helps all students perform better in other subjects. And even though this school year is over, parents remain concerned because music education programs in schools nationwide are continuing to fall victim to sweeping budget cuts and are being crowded out by an ever-growing list of federal and state mandates.

Studies have shown that:

  • Schools that are producing the highest academic achievement in the United States are spending 20 to 30 percent of the day on the arts, with special emphasis on music. (International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IAEEA) Test)
  • Music enhances the process of learning and nourishes students’ integrated sensory, attention, cognitive, emotional and motor capacities– factors that are shown to be the driving forces behind all other learning. (Konrad, R.R., “Empathy, Arts and Social Studies”)
  • Students of lower socioeconomic status who had music lessons in grades 8-12 increased their math scores significantly as compared to non-music students. But just as important, reading, history, geography and even social skills soared by 40 percent. (Gardiner, Fox, Jeffrey and Knowles, Nature)

This is why we here at 8th Continent Soymilk are SO proud to be donating $50,000 to schools’ music programs on your behalf as part of the prize for being one of the five winners of our Nice Job Mom: We Rock Contest!

The “Nice Job, Mom: We Rock” program invites you to share, in 50 words or less, the tips and tricks that go along with being a rock star parent. This will place you in the running to win a truly rockin’ experience with acclaimed singer and songwriter (and soy milk enthusiast) Sara Bareilles.

Remember: You don’t have to be a mom to enter! You can even enter tips and tricks your parents used in raising you. Or maybe you are a babysitter or have a niece or nephew and you have discovered a great trick, make sure to post it as well. For example, Sara Bareilles isn’t a mom and check out her awesome tips!

” My mom has always instilled in me a wonderful attitude of “follow your heart and do what makes you happy”. I have never once felt judged for my choices, even when we disagreed. My mom has always given me nothing but the most amazing platform to jump off off- feeling that even if I mess up, she’ll be there to help me pick up the pieces. I am so grateful for that, and someday I hope to teach my children the same thing.”

-Sara Bareilles

” I think it’s important to encourage kids to be competent in the kitchen. It’s a fantastic way to also build their self esteem and teach them to eat well at the same time. A great way to get kids involved is to choose one night a week where the kids get to cook! Have them choose a simple, healthy, yummy meal, and then let them throw on an apron and take over. (Under supervision of course.) One idea is a food kids generally love: Tacos. This is a really simple meal, and can be made in a healthy way so easily. Chop up fresh lettuce, tomato, cilantro and onion, and maybe have a lime wedge handy as well. You can buy a package seasoning that makes getting the flavor of the taco filling a snap, and ready made shells if you don’t want to make your own. Or there are always soft-tacos, as well. You can even substitute turkey or soy meat if you’re looking to cut down on your calories and fat. Definitely one of my go-to meals for quick, simple dinner that kids love.”

-Sara Bareilles

“Music has always been a refuge for me in my life. When I went through a very difficult time as an adolescent, I turned to music as a source of comfort and confidence. As I’ve grown this love has deepened and strengthened over time. I am so lucky that I had access to music growing up and in my schools. I don’t know where I would be now if I hadn’t had it back then. I’d like to encourage moms to enter the 8th continent contest to potentially to win $10,000 for a school that needs it, and keep music alive in the schools. But contest aside, I want to encourage moms out there to support their kids in their musical endeavors. It might not just be a “passing phase” or a “fad” if your little one is into the drums, or guitar, or the flute or sings in the shower. It might be a true passion that needs nurturing and encouragement. This contest is just one of the many ways you can support your kids in wonderful ways.”

-Sara Bareilles

So make sure to head over to Nice Job Mom: We Rock to enter your tip now and do your part to support your school’s music programs! You can also follow us on Twitter and Facebook to stay updated with the best tips, recipes and crafts that we supply daily!
