This Weekend! Lopez at Fiesta Hermosa

This Sunday and Monday I get to catch a plane out to LAX and attend one of my favorite annual events! Fiesta Hermosa is known as the largest arts and crafts fair in Southern California, and it isn’t hard to see why. There’s a highly diverse food court, a beer and wine garden and two stages of live music all throughout the day!

Not only that, but you can peruse through the countless number of tables displaying amazing art available for purchase, and usually at a very good price!

If you remember (WAY back when), this was the first event I attended on behalf of 8th Continent. I got to meet so many new people and introduced them to 8th Continent. It was awesome because I realized that when people give it a chance, they love our soymilk as much as I do! I even made a taste testing video where people blindly tried our soymilk vs. the popular soymilk brand to see which one they preferred. Needless to say, we won. I can’t explain how much I am looking forward to seeing some of these people again and looking back on such a long and adventurous journey.

If you are planning on coming out with the kiddies, don’t fret! They have tons of entertainment for children as well! There are Pony Rides, Petting Zoos and amazing Face Painters. I got an awesome piece of art brushed on my face last year. So as you can see, it is not only for kids; but also for the kid inside of the adult.

I’ll be cruising around, taking pictures, handing out free 8th Continent and a whole bunch of coupons! Make sure to come on out and say hi! If you’re on Twitter send us a shout out when you come around.

8th Continent Soymilk at the Los Angeles Film Festival

If you have been following around with my adventures for a while- you probably remember me stopping by the San Diego Film Festival in 2009 while I was on my 8th Continent Soymilk Taste of Life Tour. There I not only saw amazing films, but I also met Wyland who does those amazing whale and sea life murals, and Craig Slike. (aka the Mole) Needless to say, I had an absolute blast and was amazed by all of the phenomenal and artsy shorts and films I got to see.

In three days starts the Los Angeles Film Festival which is going to be huge with more than typically 80,000 people in attendance and over 200 features, shorts, and music videos from more than 40 countries.

Unfortunately I won’t be able to go this year, but all of you Movie Buffs out there who are able to most certainly should! There are several different types of passes available for sale including the Festival 5-Pack that allows you to attend 4 different screenings of your choice and a one-day pass to the Zone Perfect live Create Lounge.
Go here to see all of the different pass options.
The features will be shown in over 10 different venues in downtown LA and there will also be food and attractions outside- including some outside screenings.

Also make sure to keep an eye out for the 8th Continent Soymilk team! They will be going around with coolers and on the 8th Continent tricycle passing out ice cold 8th Continent Soymilk and coupons to make sure the festivities keep going!

Go here to check out the different films you can view at the Festival.

Let me know which films you liked and describe them for me so I can live vicariously through you on my Facebook or on my Twitter!

May is National Bike Month

Article by Sara Lopez

I recently bought myself a beauty of a bike. It’s a street bike, crimson red, 14 gear and I named her Roxanne. I knew I wanted a bike that could go long distances, work best on pavement, and would be good for a commute in a city.

There a couple of great reasons to pick up biking. It’s great for your health and the environment. We’re not saying ditch the main ride for full time commutes, but try biking to work on the sunny days or planning weekend bike trips here and there.

That said, below is an intro on bikes for anyone on the fence.

The first step to choosing the right bike for you is deciding what you’re going to use it for and where you’re going to ride it. Check out the different types of bikes available so you can find your perfect match and get out there.

There are basically four main types of bicycles to choose from:

Road Bikes

Road Bikes are designed for riding on pavement and going fast and long distances. A road bike usually has a light-weight frame, skinny tires and a seat that has you positioned bent over the handlebars.

The frames of most road bikes are not particularly beefy in construction and generally won’t stand up well for extended periods under heavy loads or on really rough surfaces. Their light-weight is intended for long distance riding on pavement. They are about as well-suited for a path in the woods as you would be when wearing high heels.

Mountain Bikes

These bikes have wide tires, usually with knobby treads and a stout frame, and are designed to handle the rugged trails without disintegrating.

Mountain bikes do not go as fast as road bikes, which is a trade-off for their durability along with a more comfortable riding position. You sit higher on these bikes, more upright with the straight handlebars, which is often a happier choice for people with back problems than being hunched over as you are on a road bike.

Hybrid Bikes

Hybrid Bikes are a compromise between road and mountain bikes and offer the best features of both if most of your riding will be shorter trips on pavement. With skinnier, smooth tires, they typically can go faster than mountain bikes, yet feature the upright seat and handlebar position that many people favor.

Hybrids are a good choice for most city riding, and offer speed, durability and comfort.

Cruisers

Cruisers are bikes with wide tires, wide seats, upright handlebars and sometimes even just a single gear. These are the bikes that you’ll often see at the beach. Simpler mechanically, they are easy to maintain but work best with flat terrain and a rider whose main interest is more about being comfortable than with going fast. They’re intended for cruising on paved level terrain at the top speed of chill.

There are other variations and types of bikes like the Tandem, Tricycles and Recumbents, but these four are the most widely used. So now that you know which bike is right for you- get out there and enjoy the wind in your hair in the sunshine!

Youth Arts Month!!!

For those of you who do not know it- guess what March is?!? That’s right! It is Youth Arts Month (YAM)!

This tradition of celebrating the youth’s participation in the arts has been going on since 1961. Which makes us here at 8th Continent Soymilk very excited because it’s a chance for everyone to take a whole month to celebrate kids and their artistic development. Sometimes we take for granted how awesome kids are because of their wild imaginations.

Several people are celebrating YAM in their own way. Nationally, schools are holding flag design competitions, and selected designs will be flown in Washington, DC at the National Art Association Convention. In cities all over the US you can go to the local main libraries and see the community’s children displaying their art. You can help bring YAM to your kids by having an afternoon of crafts or drawing at home! You can also check with your school to see how they’re getting involved.
