Create Something Saturday- Earrings Frame

Article by: Sara Lopez

If you wear any sort of earrings, you probably recognize how much of a challenge it is to keep them organized. The long dangely ones get all twisted in the drawers whereas the studs end up miss their pair like a lonely sock on laundry day. So I decided to come up with a solution- The Earring Frame! This DIY craft is super easy and lets you put your jewelry out on display like works of art!

Supplies:

  • Frame (I got mine from a thrift store for two bucks!)
  • screen
  • Popsicle stick
  • scissors
  • hot glue gun

Directions:

If you bought your frame from a thrift store, make sure to wipe it down and clean it up.

If you don’t like the color of the frame you bought, now is the tome to spray paint it.

Once the frame is the desired color, measure ir and cut out a square piece of the screen material.

Don’t worry if the square is a bit larger than the frame, you can always trim it down!

Next place the screen on the back part of the frame and apply hot glue.

Use your popsicle stick to press the screen into the glue and allow it to dry to the frame.

Next step- pick out which earrings to display and attach them to the screen! Super easy and you will never lose or tangle your earrings again!

DIY Felt Flower Pin for Mother’s Day

Article by Sara Lopez

You heard us right- Mother’s Day is coming up! Meaning in just two days!

We here at 8th Continent Soymilk think moms are something really special. So why not make something special for them? This year we are making our mothers a simple DIY Felt Flower Pin so they can wear it and be reminded daily how much we care for them.

Materials:

  • Felt Sheet (two or one colors depending on the color you want your flower)
  • Pin Backs
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Scissors
  • Thread and Needle
  • Big Button

Instructions:

Cut 8 petals out of the felt sheet. You want them to be about an inch long.

Take the other felt sheet and cut out 8 petals that are smaller than the ones you cut out of the other felt fabric.

Cut a circle out of the felt fabric (which one is up to you seeing as this piece will not be visible once your flowers is constructed.)

Sew the Pin back onto the circular piece of felt and make sure it is secure.

Take your large petals, put a line of hot glue at the base and carefully pinch the sides together. Do this to all of the petals, both the larger and smaller ones.

Take your circular piece of felt with the pin back on it and hot glue the large petals onto the circle.

Once your large petals are glued, then glue your smaller petals inside of the larger petals.

Once you have all of your petals glued on you may want to look at your flower and see if you should to any trimming to make it look its best.

After trimming, glue a button in the center of the petals to complete your DIY Felt Flower Pin.

If you would like, you can also attached the flower to a hair clip, a purse, a headband, wherever you like!

Egg-Free Easter Craft!

Article by: Sara Lopez

If you didn’t already know, 8th Continent Soymilk is %100 vegan, and proud of it! We are also kosher, lactose-free, dairy-free and gluten-free!

We had posed a question a couple times throughout the last month to vegans, asking them if they do or don’t color eggs for Easter. The response was an overwhelming NO! It makes perfect sense, but that got us to thinking what other crafts you can do with your kids besides dying Easter eggs! We think we may have hit this nail on the head!

This is a super simple DIY plastic Easter Egg Garland. You have your kids help you decorate and paint the eggs, put candy in the and display them for your Easter decorations!

Materials:

  • Plastic Easter Eggs
  • Acrylic Paint or squeezable puff paints
  • One long piece of yarn
  • Buttons, glitter, sequins, etc. (optional)

Directions:

Decide what colors you want to paint your plastic eggs and put them out on a stack of old newspaper or even a magazine.

Open your eggs so that you can hold on to the egg while you paint it with the other hand.

Once you have finished painting, leave the egg opened and place on a newspaper to dry. (this way none of the paint will smudge off)

You can also mix it up and put sequins on your eggs, glitter, glue buttons on, etc! Let your kids express themselves and make their egg their very own style.

Once the eggs have dried, take the long piece of yarn, position it in between the two halves and close the egg.

Space the eggs out however you want and make the Plastic Egg Garland as long as you want.

You can hang it up for decoration and you can also include a piece of candy in them or unclip them and hide them for Easter Egg Hunt time!

Are you vegan or egg-free? How do you celebrate Easter? Let us know on Twitter and on Facebook!

Also, have you entered our Nice Job Mom: We Rock Contest yet? You get a chance to see Sara Bareilles live in a VIP concert experience and we will be donating $50,000 towards a school’s music program of your choice! Make sure to read here for more details.

Create Something Saturday- DIY Glass Etching!

As I sat there drinking Chocolate 8th Continent Soymilk out of one of my wine glasses, (which I always do because it makes me feel fancy), I realized how plain Jane they looked. In my apartment, and with just about everything I own, I try to add my personal touch so it feels as if it is more “me”.

This craft is super easy and doesn’t take long at all! You can do the DIY glass sketching on glasses, vases, windowpanes, whatever you like! I had some left over vinyl bird stickers from a vinyl wall decal that decided to never stick so I thought I would make a one-of-a-kind wine glass set with bird etchings in them.

Supplies:

  • Something made of glass
  • Glass Etching Cream (you can find this at any hobby or craft store)
  • Exacto knife
  • Vinyl decal that you would like to permanently put on the something made of glass
  • Paint brush or Q-tip
  • 8th Continent Soymilk to drink out of the etched glass so you can feel fancy too

Directions:

  • Exacto knife out your shape and the surrounding area so that you have a vinyl stencil
  • Make sure to cut around your shape enough to have some space to overlap the etching cream without getting it on the rest of the glass
  • Brush on a thick coat of the etching cream on your design in an up and down direction
  • Leave the cream on for 5 minutes and then rinse off with cool water, wash and dry.
  • Peel your vinyl sticker off of the surface and you are left with your etched design.
  • Pour glass of 8th Continent Soymilk in your newly etched glass and enjoy!

The craft was super-easy, but taking pictures of it so you could see the outcome wasn’t! Please excuse my less-than-professional photography skills!

Create Something Saturday- Recycled Greeting Card Ornament

They are piling up on your table, but they are so beautiful you can’t bring yourself to throw them away! Card after card, glitter starts working its way into your carpet and you re-read the warm wishes from friends and family members. If only there were something to do with these cards!

Don’t you fret! We have the perfect craft for you. This Recycled Card Ornament will let you remember all of the beautiful greetings you got throughout your holiday, and it makes for perfect decorations!

Supplies:

  • several used greeting cards
  • 2-1/2″ punch, or a glass with a 2-1/2″ base for tracing
  • pencil
  • small scrap of cardboard
  • ruler
  • glue stick
  • binder clips
  • hole punch
  • ribbon

Directions:

  • Use the 2-1/2″ punch (or trace a 2-1/2″ glass base) to punch 20 circles from assorted cards.
  • Using a ruler and pencil, draw a triangle measuring 2-1/8″ on all sides on a scrap of cardboard; cut out the triangle to use as a template.

  • Trace the triangle onto the back of each greeting card circle and score each circle along the triangle lines using a bone folder or ruler. The circle should fold so the printed sides of each circle are on the interior of a small triangle-bowl shape.
  • Using five of the scored circles, glue stick the flap of one circle to the flap of another, continuing with all five circles to form a star shape. Clamp together with binder clips and let dry for 15 minutes.

  • Working with 10 more greeting card circles for the middle layer, glue the flaps to the bottom layer flaps, clamp and let dry.
  • Use the last five greeting card circles to form a top layer. Glue, clamp and dry.
  • Punch one extended flap with the hole punch, thread a length of decorative ribbon and hang.

Create Something Saturday: Thankful Doorknob Hanger

Every year at Thanksgiving dinner, my family goes around from person to person and lists what they are thankful for. I’m not trying to sound cliché, but when it comes to me, I have a hard time pinning down just one reply. My mother raised me to be thankful for everything in our lives and to never take things for granted. That is truly the meaning of Thanksgiving to me.

Here is a cute craft that you can make with the kids to teach them to be thankful for something every day!

Supplies

  • Paint
  • Non-Finished Wood Door Hanger (You can pick this up at any craft store)
  • Post-It Notes
  • Pencil
  • Glue
  • Raffia

Directions

  • Paint the wood doorknob hanger yellow.
  • Allow the hanger to dry and using the eraser end of a pencil, create various colors of dots on the hanger by dipping it into paint and applying to the hanger to make it look like an ear of corn.
  • Once the dots have dried, glue a Post-It Note pad on the hanger and a paper that says: “Today I am thankful for…”
  • Tie the raffia around the top of the hanger for decoration (you can also attach a pencil to the raffia)
  • Have your little one write what they are thankful for each day on the post-it note pad.

You can take the ones already written on and hang them on the fridge or wherever you’d like!

You can also gather all of these notes come Thanksgiving dinnertime to share with family and friends.

From the 8th Continent Soymilk Family to yours: Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Create Something Saturday- Mini Monsters

This is my niece’s first Halloween so I wanted to make her a little cute monster to play with and keep around as she grows up. Being as young as she is I certainly didn’t want to make them too spooky. So I worked on sewing the Cutest Little Mini Monsters you could imagine.

Materials:

  • Colored felt sheets
  • Sewing thread and needle
  • Stuffing
  • Buttons

Fold your felt sheet in half and cut an outline of your mini monster making sure you have the top fold intact.

Decide what you want the face of your Mini monster to look like and sew that on. As you can see, I used thick thread for the mouth of the green Mini monster and the eye of the Orange Mini Monster. You can also used buttons and other cut out pieces of felt to form the face.

Take two pieces of the felt sheet left over from cutting out the body of your Mini monster to make arms.

Fold those two pieces of felt in half and sew each side. Once sewn, turn them inside out to make your arms and set these aside.

Once you have given your Mini Monster a face, then turn it inside out and sew from the top of the monster down.

I sewed hand and needle style because I liked the way the stitching appears.

When you have sewn to about half way down your Mini Monster, you tuck the arms in, with the open end of the arms laying outside your inside out Monster and continue sewing to keep into place.

Once you have reached the bottom portion of your Mini Monster, you will flip it inside out.

The only part left to sew should be the feet. Before you sew them together, insert stuffing and push around with an object such as a pencil to fill your horns or other smaller areas.

Last but not least, sew the bottom section of your Mini Monster and enjoy!

Extra Tip-

I also made one of my Mini Monsters into a car freshener. I simply put a scented tree inside along with the stuffing before sewing the little guy up and he is now hanging from my rear view mirror.

Also insert some autumn inspired potpourri into your Mini Monster along with the stuffing to create an adorable decoration that will also make your house smell awesome!

Create Something Saturday’s- Vinly Record Wrist Cuff

Vinyl Record Wrist Cuff

I have always been a fanatic for vinyl records. I remember listening to Michael Jackson’s “Beat it” on my Fisher Price record player on the sidewalk in front of my house dancing with all of my friends. When the iPod first came out, I was still listening to my 45’s. And now that I am all grown up, I have refined my collection down to only a few hundred vinyl records. So I go through them and listen to records every day, but today I stumbled upon a techno remix of Earth Wind and Fire. Keep in mind I adore Earth Wind and Fire, but this remix just wasn’t my taste. So I started thinking- what can I make with this record?

It was only natural that I made it into something I could use to show my love for records. So a wrist cuff? I say YES!

What you will need

  • A vinyl record
  • A cookie pan
  • An oven
  • Kitchen sheers
  • Oven mits

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 275 degrees
  • Place vinyl record on cookie sheet
  • Allow to sit in oven for about 5 minutes or until you can see it warping- The amount of time you leave the record in the oven will depend what era the vinyl is from because the thickness of records changed from time period and company
  • (Using Oven Mits) Take the cookie pan out of the oven and cut one strip down the middle of the record. Cut the strip about an inch wide
  • Once you have finished cutting, the record probably has cooled down and is no longer as pliable, so pop it right back in the oven for about another 4 minutes!
  • (Using Oven Mits) take out the strip you had cut and roll it around itself, leaving the middle open enough to comfortably fit your wrist
  • Hold the record strip in this position until it has cooled and is no longer pliable
  • Your cuff should be flexible enough to take it off and put it on.
  • Go out and show off your new awesome bracelet to your friends and look like an absolute rockstar

Are you going to make this? Have you recycled and revamped something you didn’t have use for into an awesome creation? Hit me up on Facebook or on Twitter and give me some more ideas for my next DIY craft!

Create Something Saturday- 8th Continent Carton Bird Feeder

This is a great craft that teaches your children the importance and joy of reusing and making recycled crafts. Parents, make sure to help your child with the cutting. To add a little more fun to the project, kids can paint the outside for extra flare!

Supplies:

  • 1 8th Continent Soymilk carton, free with purchase of 8th Continent Soy Milk ;)
  • scissors
  • Xacto Knife
  • yarn or twine
  • bird seed

First, enjoy and drink your 8th Continent Soymilk until it’s empty, then wash it thoroughly.

After the carton is dry, cut a square in two opposing sides of the carton. I used an Xacto knife for cleaner lines.

Make sure the lip of the bird feeder is high enough from the bottom of the carton so that you are able to put bird seed inside.

Using the tip of the Xacto knife, puncture the top of the carton and rotate the blade slowly in a circle to make a hole.

String your yarn or twine through the hole.

Fill the birdfeeder with bird seed and find a limb outside of your window where you can enjoy the view of birds coming up to their new Sunny 8th Continent bird feeder.
